Please Rewind explores the traces that human beings unconsciously leave behind on media objects. The work takes videotapes from Centro Kim’s archive that have not been rewound; capturing the precise frame where the tape had last been stopped after viewing. These frames were then turned into animated gifs and projected into the walls of an ex-bunker in Brescia, Italy, built as a safe space during World War II aerial raids. The walls, made of grainy and rugged cement, blend with the projected image, giving it a peculiar texture. The essence of the work, giving new meaning to dead images, comes together with the essence of the exhibition: giving a new purpose to a place with a complicated history.
